Nepal has several beautiful and interesting temples which attract both pilgrims and visitors each year. The most important Hindu temple in Nepal is Pashtupatinath which stands on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. It has tremendous religious significance all over South Asia and attracts many sadhus. Non Hindus are not allowed to enter the main temple but can walk round the outside. On the banks of the Bagmati there are often funerals at the cremation ghats.
One of the world’s largest stupas is at Bodhnath to the east of Kathmandu. This is the religious centre for the large population of Tibetan exiles in Nepal.
For Buddhists the large temple at Swayambhunath is one of the most recognisable places in Nepal. It is also known as the “Monkey Temple” after the large troop stationed on the hill. There are magnificent views of Kathmandu from the top of the steps and visitors can walk around the temple, see prayer wheels and offerings to Buddha. The stupa with its watchful eyes symbolises the unity of all life.
