Patan

An ancient city with carved doorways, intriguing palaces and hidden temples, Patan is on the outskirts of Kathmandu and well worth exploring. Enter a different world as you pass the craft workshops, the food sellers and children to reach Durbar Square. There is a long Buddhist history here with four stupas on the corners of this city. Here is the Royal Palace, one of the most stunning architectural displays in Nepal.

Durbar Square was at its best between the 14th and 18th centuries and most notably during the reign of King Siddhinarsingh. At one end the commercial district is marked by the Mangal Bazar and the Bhimsen Temple is dedicated to the god of trade and commerce. Visit Muk Chowk to appreciate the carvings and the ancient splendour of the Royal Palace and the beautiful doorways.

The golden Temple to the north of Durbar Square was founded in the 12th century and has some exquisite structures within the courtyard. With many other temples in the area this is an area rich in culture and history. It is a pleasant place to come to escape the chaotic streets of Kathmandu and admire the craftsmanship seen in the architecture of this Newari city.
