Getting to Nepal

Nepal is a landlocked country and most people arrive at Tribhuvan Airport located in Kathmandu which is the country’s only international airport. Many international airlines fly to Nepal including Jet, Royal Nepal Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Gulf Air. Tourist visas can be purchased on arrival.

There are six land entry points to Nepal depending on the political conditions. One is from Tibet and the other five from India. Some people drive their own vehicles across the border and an international permit is required. The five land crossings are all in the terai par tof Nepal at Sunauli, Birganj, Mahendranagar, Kakarbhitta, and Nepalganj. These can all be crossed by personal vehicle and also by bus from india. The Tibetan border is only for official tours and is susceptibel to closure due to political issues. Altitude sickness is another problem on this route. There is a bus service between Kathmandu and Lhasa, however travellers using this route should cnsider an alyternative way in case the border is closed and thet have to reort to “plan B”.
