Getting around Nepal

Domestic air travel is an efficient way of travelling around Nepal and there are flights from the domestic airport in Kathmandu to Pokhara, Biratnagar, Nepalganj and to some of the trekking areas such as Lukla. Visitors can also take panoramic flights across the Himalayas to see Everest and the other famous mountain peaks. Airlines operating domestic flights include Buddha Air, Yeti Air and Royal Nepal Airlines.

On popular tourist routes there are express buses between Kathmandu and other major cities. The government bus company is Sajha Yatayat. Nepalese roads are not in the best conditions and visitors should be prepared for sharp bends, cows and enormous potholes. It is recommended to travel by day as night driving is dangerous along some of the roads.

Car hire is possible in Nepal between major cities and the Kathmandu Valley and is easily arranged through travel agents in Kathmandu. Larger towns have auto rickshaws and cycle rickshaws for hire which are an interesting way to travel short distances. Negotiate the fare before travelling.

There are two train lines in Nepal which operate from Janakpur over the Indian border. Tourists are not allowed to cross the border using the passenger train.
