Everest Base Camp

Trekking to Everest Base camp is a classic walk and one well worth doing. It can take up to 21 days from Jiri which does not have the views of the higher levels or some trekkers fly to the airstrip at Lukla and walk from there on a 15 day trek. It is essential to train beforehand to ensure you are at your fittest and you will need to ensure you have the correct gear. It is not recommended to trek alone.

The maximum altitude reached is 5545metres at Kala Patar and there are a number of stunning places to see on the way. All treks in Nepal require a trekking permit. From Lukla the trail winds upwards through villages and farmland to the steep climb to reach Namche Bazaar which is the last place en route with electricity and a great place to explore the shops and buy supplies. More importantly a rest day here allows trekkers to acclimatise.

From Namche the trail passes stunning views as it climbs to Tengboche via Khumjung and the Everest View Hotel. At Tengboche the monastery is a major attraction with its majestic views of Amadablam, Lhotse, and Everest. Onwards to Periche as the trek reaches the Himalayan Mountain Rescue Hospital. It is usual for trekkers to spend a further day acclimatising here before the final push to Base Camp. As the climb to Gorak Shep progresses there are colder conditions and the terrain is rougher. Getting to Kala Pattar is the best view a trekker will get of Everest without going to the top. Base camp is a six hour round trip from Gorak Shep.

The descent is a lot quicker and takes 2-3 days. Just the experience of having achieved this trek is a memory that will stay with me forever. I highly recommend it as a once in a lifetime experience.
