Most people visit Nepal for the mountains however the plains or Terai should not be overlooked as there is a lot to see and do. With jungles, forts and temples as well as national parks this is definitely an area of Nepal to consider as part of your holiday planning and not just a place to cross the border to India.
Visit the Royal Chitwan National Park for a view of tigers or rhino, and go bird spotting in Royal Bardia National Park. Help bath an Elephant in Sauraha. Many visitors come to the Terai to explore its cities such as Janakpur and Tansen. Around Tansen there are some beautiful temples and some excellent walks to Ranighat Durbar. More walking is available in the Chitwan Hills where visitors can travel past small villages. A women’s co operative with artisan items is at Janakpur Women’s Development centre.
The Terai is a malaria zone and therefore travellers will need to seek medical advice before travelling to this area. It has also seen Maoist insurgencies in recent years and it is important to check out the latest position before travelling.
